The FATE™ Program
Food Allergy Tolerance Enhancement
Dr. Atul Shah's FATE™ Program has helped over 15,000+ Food Allergy Families for a reason. A combination of exclusive testing, meticulous care, attention to detail, and compassion.
Phase 1
Patient History & Initial Allergy Assessment
Dr. Shah reviews your history, past reactions, and daily routine so your care plan is tailored to your life. This creates the foundation for testing, treatment, and safer next steps.
Phase 2
IgE Tests & Basophil Activation Test
Standard IgE blood work and BAT help clarify which allergens are truly risky. This gives Dr. Shah a more precise view before challenges or treatment are considered.
Phase 3
Oral Food Challenges
Supervised OFCs help confirm a diagnosis or see whether tolerance has developed. Each challenge is performed with close medical monitoring and clear next steps.
Phase 4
SLIT & OIT Desensitization
SLIT and OIT introduce tiny amounts of allergen in a controlled, stepwise fashion. Treatment is adjusted around the patient’s history, comfort level, and goals.
Phase 5
Bite Proof to Free Eating
Progress made in the office transitions into confident, real world eating with medical guidance. Patients work toward the level of food freedom that feels right for them.

Advanced Food Allergy Testing on the Upper East Side
At NYFA, advanced food allergy testing in NYC, including the Basophil Activation Test through the only certified BAT lab in New York State, helps patients better understand true allergy risk and move toward a personalized care plan with Dr. Atul Shah.
At NY Food Allergy & Wellness, we are proud to offer the Basophil Activation Test (BAT), a cutting edge diagnostic tool for identifying food allergies. This advanced test measures the activation of basophils, a type of white blood cell, in response to allergens. The BAT provides highly accurate results and can detect allergic reactions that might not be identified through traditional testing methods.
We are the only certified lab in the region offering the Basophil Activation Test. Our certification ensures that we maintain the highest standards of accuracy and reliability in our testing procedures. By choosing NY Food Allergy & Wellness for your allergy testing needs, you can be confident that you are receiving the most advanced and reliable diagnostics available.
The Basophil Activation Test is particularly useful for patients who have complex allergy profiles or who have not found answers through conventional tests. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of ongoing allergy treatments, providing valuable insights for personalized care plans.
Key benefits of the Basophil Activation Test include:
High Accuracy: Detects allergic reactions that may not be visible through skin prick or blood tests.
Comprehensive Analysis: Measures the specific activation of basophils, providing detailed information about allergic responses.
Certified Lab: Conducted in our certified lab, ensuring the highest standards of testing quality and reliability.
If you suspect you have a food allergy and need precise and reliable testing, the Basophil Activation Test at NY Food Allergy & Wellness is an excellent choice. Contact us today to learn more about this innovative test and to schedule your appointment.
Oral Food Challenges are considered the gold standard for diagnosing food allergies. During an OFC, the patient consumes small amounts of the suspected allergen under strict medical supervision to observe any reactions. This method provides definitive results and is conducted with the utmost care and safety.
Skin prick tests are a quick and effective way to identify specific allergens. During the test, a small amount of allergen is placed on the skin, which is then gently pricked to allow the allergen to enter. Results are typically visible within 15–20 minutes, making it a fast and reliable option.
Needle free tests are ideal for children and needle phobic patients. Using advanced technology, these tests provide precise results without the discomfort associated with traditional testing methods.
Blood tests are highly accurate and comprehensive, suitable for all age groups. They measure the presence of specific IgE antibodies in the blood, which can indicate an allergy. This method is particularly useful for patients who cannot undergo skin testing.
IgE specific to peanut components are very helpful in accurate diagnosis of true peanut allergy compared to false positives due to underlying tree pollen allergy. Ara h 2 and Ara h 6 are considered components with potential for systemic reactions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best treatment for a food allergy?
Food allergy care is individualized. A typical plan starts with expert evaluation, allergen avoidance, food label education, and an emergency action plan that includes epinephrine for severe reactions. For some patients, desensitization options such as Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) or Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) may be appropriate under medical supervision. At NY Food Allergy & Wellness, Dr. Atul Shah evaluates each patient's history, testing, and goals to determine which options may fit within the FATE™ Program. Results and timelines vary by patient.

How long does it take to build tolerance to a food allergen?
There is no fast timeline for building tolerance to a food allergen. When used, desensitization approaches such as OIT or SLIT are gradual, closely monitored processes that may take months or longer. These therapies are not considered a cure and do not replace emergency treatment for anaphylaxis. NY Food Allergy & Wellness focuses on structured, physician-guided progress based on each patient's age, allergen, reaction history, test results, and treatment goals.

Is anyone working on a cure for food allergies?
Yes. Researchers are actively studying food allergy treatments, including immunotherapy, biologic medications, and other advanced approaches. A guaranteed cure for food allergies is still being investigated. Today, NY Food Allergy & Wellness focuses on accurate testing, supervised oral food challenges when appropriate, and evidence-based desensitization options that may help improve safety, flexibility, and daily quality of life.

What over-the-counter medicine can help mild food allergy symptoms?
For mild symptoms limited to one body area, a clinician may recommend an H1 antihistamine. Antihistamines do not treat anaphylaxis and are not a substitute for epinephrine when severe symptoms are present. Anyone with a known or suspected food allergy should work with an allergist to understand mild versus severe symptoms, when to use epinephrine, and how to follow a clear emergency action plan.

What is the FATE™ Program?
The FATE™ Program, short for Food Allergy Tolerance Enhancement, is Dr. Atul Shah's structured five-phase food allergy desensitization pathway at NY Food Allergy & Wellness. It may include detailed history review, advanced diagnostics such as IgE testing and the Basophil Activation Test (BAT), supervised oral food challenges when appropriate, SLIT or OIT, and long-term maintenance planning. The goal is to support safer, more flexible daily life through individualized medical care.

What food allergy testing does NY Food Allergy & Wellness offer?
NY Food Allergy & Wellness offers a stepwise approach to food allergy testing that may include medical history review, skin prick testing, specific IgE blood testing, component diagnostics, the Basophil Activation Test (BAT), and supervised oral food challenges when appropriate. No single test tells the full story by itself. Dr. Shah uses testing in context with the patient's history and goals to clarify risk and guide treatment decisions.
